From Gerry and Nic Fletcher, organisers of the Marina NHS Team :-
3000 items. Plastic aprons and gowns from bin bags and blue sheets. Masks headbands , end of life hearts, fabric aprons and scrub bags from duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases. Crocheted ear protectors from soft wool with buttons. Hundreds of WhatsApp messages, early morning texts, phone calls and deliveries, a haberdashery table always filled with goodies. Urgent emails from Di requesting more bins bags and buttons. Help from a neighbour when our fingers got sore or a machine broke a needle. Neighbours getting to know one another. Sewing machines and scissors lent out, patterns exchanged and created, tutorials and shortcuts shared, buttons sent from friends, guidance from those who knew to those who were learning. Security guards and yellow bin collections helped keep the flow of goods in and out of the marina during lockdown.
We raised £2580 for materials, and now £1500 has been donated in equal amounts to Oakhaven Hospice, Waterside Women’s Refuge and Waterside Food Bank Blackfield. The Herald is running an article on our work coming out on the 24th June, followed by an update in their July issue.
How did all of this happen? A group of men and women, full of energy and commitment, good will and determination to protect our NHS and care workers decided it could and it would happen. The Marina NHS Team and the U3A combined forces to produce a never ending supply of fabulous PPE which protected our frontline workers for 12 weeks. We collected and delivered all of these items to hospitals, care homes, GP practices, carers and schools in our area. We made masks for Marina residents and friends. We sold masks to local men and women in exchange for donations.
We are grateful and humbled by all you have achieved and given to this effort. It was an honour and a joy to get to know you all, and a privilege to be part of something so worthwhile.
Thank you and please stay well and safe.
Gerry and Nic Fletcher
